Garden of Presence.jpg

This exhibition focuses on the "presence" depicted by Nakamoto Masashi.
Her paintings feature fragments of nature such as flowers and animals, but these are not simply objects; they are a medium that makes us aware of the space in which they exist.

Her works, in their tranquil compositions that evoke a whole range of senses that cannot be fully grasped through sight alone, such as smell, touch, and memory, appear as if they are floating along with the "atmosphere of the place." Memories such as the sudden scent of a plant, the smell of damp morning soil, or the feel of touching soft animal fur are quietly recreated through her paintings. In this sense, her works can perhaps be understood not as visual art, but as "devices of memory and the senses."

The materials she uses, unique to Japanese painting, allow humidity, temperature, and even the passage of time to sink into the canvas. The title of this exhibition, "Garden of Presence," symbolizes the spatiality of these overlapping layers of sensation. By combining the aesthetics of white space and space that Japanese painting has cultivated with modern physical sensations, Nakamoto expresses the visualization of sensation. It is our hope that this exhibition will go beyond the visual, touching even the sense of touch and memory.
